Metabolic syndrome is a group of biochemical and physiological abnormalities connected to the development of type2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Some say that, metabolic syndrome cannot be considered as a disease itself. In fact, it is a group of risk factors such as:

  • Unhealthy cholesterol level

  • Abdominal fat

  • High blood sugar

These factors will increase the risks of heart diseases. Some of the common causes of metabolic syndrome are:

  • Obesity

  • Hormonal imbalance

  • Insulin resistance

  • Unhealthy lifestyle

  • Stress

  • Overweight

  • Type 2 diabetes

  • Schizophrenia and other psychiatric conditions

Metabolic syndrome is also known in different names such as metabolic syndrome x, syndrome x, Reaven’s syndrome etc. Central obesity (male-pattern obesity) is considered to be the main symptom of metabolic syndrome. It is characterised with overweight, adipose tissue accumulation around the trunk and waist. Other symptoms are:

  • Elevated fasting serum triglyceride

  • High blood pressure

  • Decreased fasting serum HDL cholesterol

  • Insulin diabetes

  • Prediabetes

  • Impaired fasting glucose etc.

Increased physical activity, healthy and reduced calorie diet etc, are some of the preventive measures for metabolic syndrome. Lifestyle changes are considered to be the first-line treatment for metabolic syndrome. Other treatment options may vary according to the condition.
