Are hair-loss treatments expensive?

Prasad Poojary , Heln , Mumbai

Invest in your hair , it’s the crown you never take off !

This is a common statement that we have all heard from time immemorial. Hair loss or thinning of hair creates panic .  If you ask anyone concerned about thinning hair or baldness , what they would be willing to pay to make the issue go away?

Let me tell you the figures and you would really be surprised at what people are willing to pay . But do they  the numbers really need to be so exorbitant ?  With medicine and medical procedures becoming more refined, can those suffering from receding  hairlines access cost-effective treatments?

Let’s find out.

Hair transplants

Possibly the most popular, effective and long-lasting options for reversing hair loss are hair transplants . Grafts have previously been seen as a cosmetic procedure only open to the likes of wealthy celebrities but how much does a hair transplant cost?

The short answer appears to be anything between Rs 80,000/- to  Rs 1.50,000/-, with a number of factors contributing to the final price. Sizes and numbers of bald areas to be rectified are key, but the actual technique used is the most impactful when it comes to price. Comparing the costs, recovery times and success rates show that costs play an important part . With most patients not even needing an overnight stay at their chosen clinic, FUE transplants result in no scarring, far more natural resulting hairlines and a return to normal much sooner. Those with an active lifestyle, for example, are able to get back to the sports they love after just a few days.

Topical treatments

Pills and capsules in medical vial

Less invasive than a transplant but also considered far less effective, topical treatments for hair loss are often a first attempt at stopping the progression of a newly noticed issue. Solutions on the market are usually offered in a variety of strengths and seem to focus around the idea of stimulating shrinking hair follicles, to encourage them to start producing new hair again.

Consumers should expect to pay less for treatments such as this, but there is no guarantee of success. Although some people have reported excellent results, others have seen absolutely no difference and there is no way of predicting who will be left disappointed.

Medications

Pills and capsules in medical vial

Similar to topical lotions, medications for hair loss have not proven effective for everybody. They usually target the same issue as topical ointments, in that they are designed to stimulate follicles to open up and grow new hairs by blocking the creation of certain hormones.

Specialist shampoos

Finally, there are a number of shampoos on the market that claim to help with thinning hair. These are largely unproven and although they might clean the hair well, it is unlikely that they will help new hair to grow. Some seem to focus on thickening existing hair instead, but this is usually through the depositing of silicones that you’ll want to cleanse semi-regularly.

PRP (platelet-rich plasmatherapy

hairtransplant 5

Is another therapy for hair loss. This  is a three-step medical treatment in which a person’s blood is drawn, processed, and then injected into the scalp. Increasing clinical evidence suggests PRP can reverse hair loss and stimulate natural hair growth. Most PRP studies report following up with patients for up to six months after their procedure.

As with any cosmetic remedies, preventing further hair loss and tackling baldness can be a costly affair. It’s down to you to make a choice between one large cost for a procedure that has been proven to work or subscribing long-term to products that may never deliver the results you really want.

5 reasons for Hair Loss

hair  Prasad Poojary , Fayth Clinic

The hair on your head goes through a life cycle that involves growth, resting, and shedding. It’s common for people to lose around 100 hairs a day. If you experience sudden hair loss, loss in patches, or overall thinning, it is necessary to visit  your doctor. Some shedding is temporary and may respond well to changes in diet, certain treatments, or lifestyle changes. Other loss may be more permanent or not stop until an underlying condition is treated.

By age 40, about half of all men will experience hair loss due to hereditary conditions like androgenic alopecia (male pattern baldness). Likewise, more than half of women will experience genetic hair loss (female pattern baldness) before the age of 70. Since,  there are many types of hair loss, finding the cause can be challenging

Most hair loss is not associated with systemic or internal disease, nor is poor diet a frequent factor. Hair may simply thin as a result of predetermined genetic factors and the overall aging process. Many men and women may notice mild physiologic thinning of hair starting in their 30s and 40s. Life vicissitudes, including illness, emotional trauma, protein deprivation (during strict dieting), and hormonal changes like those in pregnancypuberty, and menopause may cause hair loss

  • common causes of hair loss include:

1.medical conditions, like alopecia areata, scalp infections, or trichotillomania (hair-pulling disorder), radiation treatment for conditions like cancer. Medical conditIons like thyroid , iron deficiency anemia , secondary syphilis can cause hair loss. Complete hair loss after chemotherapy usually regrows after six to 12 months

2.hormonal changes from pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, or thyroid issues

3.medications or supplements, such as those used for cancer, high blood pressure, depression, or arthritis

4.stress, whether physical or emotional

5.Hair styling practices, like wearing tight ponytails or cornrows

Patchy hair loss

Some conditions produce small areas of hair loss, while others affect large areas of the scalp. Common causes of patchy hair loss are

  • alopecia areata (small circular or coin size bald patches on the scalp that usually grow back within months),
  • traction alopecia (thinning from tight braids or ponytails),
  • trichotillomania (the habit of twisting or pulling hair out),
  • tinea capitis (fungal infection), and
  • secondary syphilis.

Diffuse hair loss

Some common causes of diffuse hair loss are

  • pattern alopecia,
  • drug-induced alopecia,
  • protein malnutrition, and
  • systemic disease-induced alopecia (cancer, endocrine disease, and telogen effluvium).
