Obesity has become a life-threatening condition that affects all the age group. Recent studies found an apparent increase in the prevalence of obesity and overweight in children and adolescents. Certain studies point that around 16% of the children are overweight. Among them, around 7% are obese. Various myths connected to obesity that are still prevalent in the society contributes a lot to the increasing number of obesity cases. Current eating habits such as eating pizza, burger, chips, french fries, etc. has a strong impact over the increasing number of cases of childhood and adolescent obesity along with long hours spent on internet ,mobile , TV viewing with lack of physical activity and strong family history of obesity are major contributory factors . The Obesity gene also plays a role in development of obesity. Its connection with cardiovascular diseases may increase the risk for mortality as well as morbidity. Obesity is seen more prevalent in children and adolescents over the last two decades. Childhood obesity can develop due to various factors, such as:
- Socio-cultural factors
- Environmental factors etc.
Obesity can lead to many comorbid conditions in children like early onset high blood pressure , diabetes, heart problems , PCOS, certain cancers ,metabolic syndrome, decreased self esteem , bullying by peer groups etc . For the same reason, the condition requires a multi-disciplinary approach.
